Twelve Years In The Making

Our story begins twelve years ago when Gray Shuler started working in the beer industry and developed a passion for craft beer. During this time, he was afforded the opportunity to visit craft breweries around the US and developed his dream of being able to open up a brewery of his own one day.

Bringing It Home

Once Gray had a handle on the beer industry, he decided to work in local restaurants downtown and become enveloped in the revitalization of downtown Sumter. His work in the downtown area made him realize how important this section of town was to all of Sumter and how he wanted to continue the growth by opening up his brewery here.

Sumter Original Brewery is the very first brewery to open in Sumter and a huge catalyst for continued growth in the downtown area. This 30,000 sq ft facility has three stories, a 15-barrel brewing system, and will focus on brewing a diverse selection of quality craft beer.

Meet Our Brewmaster

BrewmasterJamie is from Lamar, SC and has been professionally brewing for five years. He began with home brewing in 2015 after receiving a homebrew kit from a friend, and from there his passion grew!

Jamie is a U.S. Navy Veteran, where he served as a Master-at-Arms (military police). While serving, Jamie obtained an Associates in Criminal Justic from Florence-Darlington Technical College and shortly after, a Bachelors in Sociology from Coker University. He began 'beer'tending at Seminar Brewing in 2017 and after a three-month hiatus to hike across New Zealand... and drinking all of the beer they had to offer... began production at the brewery.

A year later, Jamie won several awards at the inaugural SC Brewers Guild Award ceremony. These medals consisted of seven golds, one silver and two bronze. He's a Cicerone Certified Beer Server (CBS) with an aim to enhance the Sumter Original Brewery and has a specialized badge in traditional German-style and traditional English-style beer!
